What to begin with?
The first thing you need is to find if something goes wrong. And the next thing is to get help. That's the most important parts of the whole treatment process. Only qualified specialist can make right diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment. The earlier the mental illness is recognized the more chances that treatment will be successful. Early help will decrease the possibility of illness recurrence.
When you decide to get help for your mental health you need to talk to your doctor. He will make a diagnosis to find out the reasons of your mental illness, that may be caused, in some cases, by another disease or medicines you are currently taking. And if it's not then you'll have to see mental health care specialist who will treat your mental disorder.
There are different health care providers who can make a diagnosis of mental illness:
- Psychiatrist: These doctors can diagnose and treat psychiatric or mental disorders. They are allowed to prescribe medications for the treatment process and also specialize in psychotherapy, which is a "verbal" way of treatment.
- Psychologist: These experts have doctoral degree in psychology. They specialize in psychotherapy and psychological testing. Psychologists are not licensed to prescribe drugs for mental disorders.
- Physician: These experts are trained in medical health care and can provide medical treatment for patients with minor symptoms of a mental illness.
- Physician Assistant: They can identify symptoms of mental disorder and skilled in psychiatric or mental disorders treatment under control of a physician.
- Nurse Practitioner: These registered nurses have some skills in psychiatric or mental illness treatment.
- Psychiatric Nurse Specialists: These experts are registered psychiatric nurses with specialization in psychiatric or mental disorder treatment.
